What is pelvic physical therapy? Is it just Kegels?
Pelvic physical therapy is skilled care for the pelvic floor and how it works with the rest of your body — hips, core, back, breath, and how you move day to day.
It is not just Kegels. Kegels alone rarely address why leaking, pressure, pain, or weakness showed up. Sometimes the pelvic floor needs to relax, coordinate, or share the work with other muscles rather than squeeze more. At Design PT we look at the whole picture and build a plan around your goals: pregnancy, postpartum, pelvic pain, leaking, prolapse, core, and getting back to activity.
Who do you treat?
We specialize in pelvic floor and core rehabilitation for women, including pregnancy and postpartum care; pelvic pain or pressure; urinary incontinence or leaking; bowel incontinence; urinary urgency; pelvic organ prolapse; pain with intimacy; vaginismus; diastasis recti and core weakness; support around pelvic surgery; fertility support focused on movement and pelvic health; and orthopedic pain connected to pelvic floor function.
Pelvic floor dysfunction can affect many areas of the body, and these are just some of the concerns we help with.
If you’re not sure whether pelvic PT is the right fit, call or send a message.
Do I need a referral?
In Illinois, you can typically start physical therapy **without a physician referral**. Many pelvic patients still come through their OB, midwife, or urogynecologist — either path is fine. In some situations a referral is required for insurance reimbursement, but we don’t require one.
How does payment work? Do you take insurance?
Design Physical Therapy is a cash-pay, out-of-network specialty practice. We are not in-network with any plan. A detailed superbill is provided upon request for your records and potential out of network reimbursement according to your insurance. HSA/FSA cards are welcome. We'll walk you through cost when
We'll walk you through the cost of care when we connect by phone and answer any questions you may have before scheduling
How long are visits?
Every visit is a full 60 minutes, one-on-one with your Doctor of Physical Therapy. You are not split between a Therapist and an aide
What should I expect at the first visit?
Unhurried, one-on-one with Dr. Erika. History, goals, assessment, movement analysis, treatment time. An internal pelvic exam may be appropriate for some patients; it is always discussed first and only done with consent. It is not required to start or for continual care. Sport bra/tank top, and flexible shorts work great for every visit.

"I couldn’t be happier and grateful for the personalized therapy provided by Erika at Design Therapy. I came in with chronic back pain. She took the time to review my case, listen carefully, and suggest the right therapy and follow-up exercises. I feel much better now and can’t wait to see her again. She’s an excellent professional and a wonderful person." - Wendy
